The 5 Stages of Grief When You Forget the Chairs

You checked the trunk last night. You specifically told yourself "chairs are in the trunk." The chairs are not in the trunk. And so it begins.

Stage 1 — Denial

You check again anyway. Maybe they slid under the gear bag. Maybe you're looking in the wrong spot. You are not looking in the wrong spot. The chairs are at home, leaning against the wall in the garage exactly where you left them after last weekend.

Stage 2 — Anger

You think about how many chairs you own. Four? Five? Why does none of them live in the car permanently? Why is this your life? You specifically thought about the chairs last night. You thought about them.

Stage 3 — Bargaining

Maybe you can sit on the cooler. Maybe there's a bleacher nearby. Maybe someone from the other team's sideline has an extra. They don't. They also forgot a chair. You bond briefly over this, which helps approximately zero percent.

Stage 4 — Depression

It's 8:12am. You have three games today. You find a patch of slightly damp grass near the corner flag and accept your fate. Your back already hurts. You didn't even bring a blanket.

Stage 5 — Acceptance

You sit on the ground like a person who has fully given up, sip your coffee, and watch your kid score a goal. It's fine. Everything is fine. The grass isn't that wet.

The Alternative

Next weekend, you'll remember the chairs. Or better yet — let someone else worry about it entirely. That's exactly why we built Sideline Society. The chairs are already there. You just show up.
