What Actually Works
Give them a job. Handing out snacks, holding the water bottles, "helping" set up the tent by holding one pole while you do all the actual work. Kids who feel useful are kids who complain significantly less. This is not a theory — it is a proven field observation.
Pack their bag separately. Their own snacks, their own water, a small activity or toy that belongs specifically to them. Ownership changes the energy. "This is my stuff for today" lands differently than "have some of your sister's goldfish."
Set expectations in the car. "We'll be here until 3pm. After the last game, you pick where we get dinner." A deal is a deal. Kids hold you to it and they should.
Find the good spots. Most tournament complexes have something — open grass to run on, a small hill worth rolling down, another sibling in the exact same situation. Two bored siblings become one functional chaos unit that entertains itself.
Have a screen backup. No shame in it whatsoever. A downloaded show or a game on a tablet is a legitimate parenting tool. Use it strategically — not as the first resort, but as the ace up your sleeve for game three when everyone's reserves are depleted.
