They are not the same experience. Not even close. If you're planning your sideline setup for a NoVA tournament season, which one you're in changes almost everything about what you need.
"Fall is the sleeper hit of the tournament calendar. When it's good, it's the best day of the whole sports year."
— The Sideline Report
Spring
Spring starts with genuine promise and ends with humidity. April weekends can be beautiful — mild temperatures, manageable sun, the fields are green, the mood is good, and everyone remembers why they signed up for this. By late May and into June, you're in a different situation entirely. The heat arrives fast in Northern Virginia and hits hard on open fields with zero overhead cover. The families who figured out their canopy setup in April are very glad they did by Memorial Day weekend.
Fall
Fall is the sleeper hit of the tournament calendar. September mornings are cool enough that you actually enjoy being outside without a second thought. The light is different — that low golden afternoon quality that makes even a 1-0 loss feel somehow acceptable. The fields are dry, the air is clear, and everyone comes in more relaxed after the summer break.
The catch with fall: weather swings. A Saturday in October in NoVA can be 70 degrees and genuinely perfect, or it can be 48 with a wind that turns an unstaked tent into a hazard and a problem. Come prepared for both ends of that range.
If you had to pick one season to have your setup fully dialed in, it's spring — the heat demands it and there's no getting around that. But fall rewards the families who show up ready, because when it's good out there, it really is the best day of the whole sports year.
