There's something that happens at an all-day tournament that's genuinely hard to explain to someone who hasn't been to one. You kind of have to be there.

You show up as strangers — or at best, acquaintances from practice drop-off who've exchanged approximately forty words over two months. You set up next to each other. Someone offers coffee from their thermos. Someone else has extra sunscreen. A kid from the other family trips over your tent stake and everybody laughs.
By game three, you're sharing snacks, trading sideline chairs, and doing a full tactical debrief on the 2-1 loss like it's something you've been watching together all season. Because in a way, you have been.
The kids are out there having their experience. But the sideline has its own thing going on — a looseness to it, a permission to just be outside together with nowhere else to be, that doesn't happen much in regular adult life. Most weekends you're somewhere with an agenda. Tournament Saturdays have one agenda and you're both already there.
You leave sunburned and tired and with grass on your shoes and somehow already looking forward to doing it again next weekend. That's the summer camp feeling. It doesn't matter that you're 38 and sore and your chair left an imprint on the back of your legs. You were part of something out there. It felt good.
