Every Friday night, somewhere in Northern Virginia, a sports parent is standing in the garage trying to remember what they forgot at last weekend's tournament. This is that problem, solved. Save this. Print it. Put it somewhere you'll actually see it.
"The families who have the best tournament days aren't better athletes or better people. They just packed better."
— The Sideline Report
For the Player
- Both jerseys (home and away)Tournaments often require both. Don't guess which one — bring both.
- Cleats + turf shoesSome complexes have both grass and turf fields in the same tournament. Bring both pairs.
- Shin guards + socksPacked separately from the cleats so you can find them at 6am without unpacking everything.
- Water bottle — labeledMinimum 32oz. More for warm weather. Their name on the side or it will disappear by game two.
- Snacks + post-game foodOranges, bars, whatever they eat. Don't rely on the field vendor for this.
For the Sideline
- Canopy tent + stakesShade is not optional on any day from April through October. Stake it every time, no exceptions.
- Chairs — the right numberCount the adults. Add one extra. You know why.
- Cooler with icePre-packed the night before. Drinks for adults and kids, not just water.

The Stuff You Always Forget
- CashFood vendors at many complexes are cash-only. $40–60 covers a full tournament day for a family.
- Phone charger / portable batteryEight hours of schedule checking, photos, and group texts will kill your battery by noon.
- IbuprofenFor you, not the kids. You'll understand by hour six.
- Extra layersNoVA morning temperatures lie. It's 52 at 7:30am and 81 by 1pm. Dress for both.
- Folding tableOptional until you've had one. Then non-negotiable.
Or Just Arrive and Relax
