Northern Virginia is one of the most active youth soccer regions in the country. On any given weekend from March through November, there are multiple tournaments running simultaneously across Loudoun, Fairfax, Prince William, and the surrounding counties. If you're new to the circuit — or just trying to understand it better — here's what you need to know.
The Tournament Season
NoVA tournament season runs in two main windows: spring (March through early June) and fall (late August through October). Summer has some activity but heat limits the big events. Indoor seasons fill the winter gap. The busiest weekends are in April, May, and September — expect heavy traffic on Route 28, 50, and the Dulles Toll Road on those mornings.

Major Tournaments on the Northern Virginia Circuit
The Virginian — One of the oldest and most prestigious tournaments in the region, hosted by Southside Youth Club (SYC) out of Lorton. Running since the 1970s, it draws teams from up and down the East Coast. Multi-field complex, all age groups, highly competitive.
The Virginia Cannon Cup — Hosted by the Virginia Soccer Association (VSA) at Loudoun Soccer Park in Leesburg. Memorial Day weekend fixture. Three divisions per age group so every team is playing for something — Cannon Cup (top), Cavalry (second), and Bull Run (third).
NCSL Tournaments — The National Capital Soccer League runs multiple events throughout the season across Northern Virginia venues. Good entry point for newer travel teams.
Club-Hosted Events — Many of the major NoVA clubs (McLean Youth Soccer, Virginia Rush, Arlington Soccer, etc.) host their own annual tournaments at home venues. These tend to be well-run with familiar fields for local families.
What to Know About NoVA Field Complexes
Most major tournaments use large multi-field complexes — some with turf, some grass, some both. Loudoun Soccer Park, South Riding fields, Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park, and the fields around Lorton are all common venues. Parking at these complexes is usually free but can get tight fast. If the tournament guide says arrive at least 45 minutes before kickoff, believe it.
The Sideline Reality
NoVA tournaments can run six to eight hours with multiple games in a day. Shade is not always available. Fields are spread out. Walking between games in 85-degree heat with a full gear bag is a real part of the experience. Come prepared — or better yet, let the gear be waiting when you arrive.
