Then it's 7:52am on a Saturday, you have a game at 8:00, and you're in a field-turned-overflow-lot a quarter mile from the right entrance. Tournament day parking is its own sport. Here's how to play it.
Arrive Earlier Than You Think You Need To
When a tournament says doors open at 7:00 for an 8:00 game, the parents who show up at 7:05 get the spots near the right entrance. The parents who show up at 7:40 park in the overflow field and do a gear-loaded hike across wet grass. There is no middle ground. Northern Virginia complexes fill quickly because multiple age groups often kick off at the same time.

Read the Tournament Field Map Before You Leave Home
Most tournaments publish a field map in the team manager email or on the event website. Read it the night before. Know which lot corresponds to which field cluster. Arriving at a complex like Loudoun Soccer Park or South Riding without knowing which entrance to use means you're solving a puzzle with a van full of impatient kids and a gear bag that weighs forty pounds.
The Drop-Off Strategy
If you're traveling with another family, consider a drop-off-and-park approach: one person drops gear and kids at the field entrance, the other parks and walks. This sounds like a small thing. It is not a small thing. It saves fifteen minutes and the kind of stress that follows you into the game.
The Walk From Parking Is Part of the Day
At large complexes, parking might be five to ten minutes from your field. If you're hauling a tent, chairs, a cooler, and a gear bag for three kids, that walk is a real logistical challenge. Wagons help. Carts help. Or — if you reserved a Sideline Society setup — your gear is already at the field and there's nothing to haul at all.
Between Games, Don't Move Your Car
If you got a good spot, stay there. Walk to other fields between games. Moving your car mid-tournament to get closer to a different field almost always ends with you in a worse spot than you started.
