There are rules to tournament day parking. Nobody put them in writing. Nobody had to. They emerged organically over thousands of early mornings in field complex lots across the country, passed down through the collective knowledge of sports parents who figured it out the hard way. Here is the hierarchy.
Tier 1 — The Untouchables
They arrived at 6:45am. Their car is six steps from the field entrance. They will not move until the final game of the day ends, regardless of whether they have a game at noon. They earned it. Nobody questions this. This is law.
Tier 2 — The Calculated
Arrived early enough for a good spot but not a great one. Has already mapped the route from their car to all three fields. Will execute this route efficiently between games. Brings a wagon to minimize trips. Respects the hierarchy. Aspires to Tier 1 at the next tournament.
"Trying to leave the lot between games to get a better spot is the tournament parking equivalent of switching checkout lines at the grocery store. It never works."
— The Sideline Report
Tier 3 — The Optimists
Arrived on time for the game — not on time for parking. Currently in the overflow area. Have made peace with the walk. Will do this differently next time. Have been saying this since last season.
Tier 4 — The Wild Card
Nobody knows how they got that spot. They arrived at 8:20 for an 8:00 game. The spot is right by the entrance. This should not be possible. It is not repeatable. Do not attempt to replicate it. It was luck and it will not return.
The Move Nobody Should Make
Moving your car between games to try for a better spot. You will leave a mediocre spot and return to a worse one. The lot fills while you're driving. Someone takes your spot before you complete a single loop. This has happened to everyone who has tried it. It will happen to you.
The Parking Problem Exists. The Gear Hauling Doesn't Have To.
Wherever you end up parking, your Sideline Society setup is already at the field. No hauling required regardless of which tier you land in. Reserve your setup.
